With the outpouring of support and interest in Sam’s situation, we thank you for your patience in awaiting this more detailed update on Sam’s recent crash. With the type of accident Sam had, there are a lot of unknowns that had to be addressed before the doctors could give us a better idea of the extent of Sam’s injuries. On Sept 10, 2016, Sam had a training accident on the local Chula Vista BMX track where he was airlifted to the hospital and operated on that evening due to sustaining fractures in his C6 and C7 vertebrae which severely compressed his spinal cord and left him with no movement below his chest. The operation involved removing his C6 vertebrae, replacing it with a titanium cage, and fusing his C5-C7 vertebrae with a plate and 4 screws. Encinitas, CA – As many of you know Destry Abbott, one of the most well respected riders in all genres of racing was diagnosed with Leukemia in May of 2016. He has started an aggressive treatment program that has him traveling back and forth from Arizona to Houston. Destry is doing everything in his power to handle cancer like he handles a race, by winning. Encinitas, CA – Update on Travis Sewell’s condition after his crash on July 27th at a motocross race in Grayslake, IL. Travis was discharged from Condell Medical Center early last week where he returned home to a great support system that can help him start his road to recovery. Even though his injuries are extensive; 8 fractured ribs, a fractured tailbone, fractured T12, a cracked sternum, 2 fractures in his pelvis, and trauma to his leg and shoulder; he and his family are keeping positive and looking forward to the next step in the healing process. Travis is scheduled to see his doctors next week where they will start to map out this recovery journey. Travis and his family are well aware that the next couple months are going to be hard. COTY SCHOCK IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY Encinitas, CA – Privateer 250 rider, Coty Schock is recovering in a hospital in New York after a crashed on Saturday at the Unadilla National. He had a successful surgery on his back where the doctors were able to repair the broken L1 vertebrae with two rods and a plate. Coty also sustained a fracture to his right wrist but no surgery was needed. Thanks to the fast response of Dr. Bodnar and the whole Asterisk team; he is expected to make a full recovery and is in high spirits according to close family members. They are hoping to get back home in the next four to five days where Coty will start his recovery process. While Coty does have insurance that will help cover some of the costs accrued in the hospital; there will be costs that are not covered. Team TLD/KTM rider Jessy Nelson suffered a crash in the second moto of the Pro Nationals at Unadilla on 8/13/16.  Details are few at the moment but we received this update from his Instagram earlier today.  Road 2 Recovery is the only nonprofit in all of action sports to support these riders in their recovery after a severe injury. jessynelson13Update: In the second Moto at Unadilla, I had a crash in a tricky turn, ultimately ending with a red flag for the race. I went down pretty hard of a direct result of the bike hitting me from behind. I am currently at a hospital in Cooperstown, NY where we are waiting for some swelling to go down in my back before doing surgery. At this time I have limited feeling from my waist down.
